HOW TO ADOPT

Thank you for looking to adopt your next animal companion through The Good Dog Rescue! By choosing to adopt, you will save a life and be rewarded with an incredible addition to your family. All of the dogs in our rescue are housed in foster homes and are cared for by loving volunteer foster families. If you are interested in meeting a specific animal, please fill out an application and our Adoption Team will contact you.

Adoption is a serious, lifelong commitment. Please make sure that all of the people and animals (and landlords) in your household are on-board with your decision to adopt an animal. Also be prepared to train and work with the animal throughout the duration of the animal’s life. Adopting a new dog is incredibly rewarding but also requires patience, love, positive reinforcement training, and commitment. We ask our adopters to be serious about this decision before filling out an application or moving forward with adoption.

Also, recognize that there is a transition period for any animal entering your home. It will not always be easy. Be prepared for the animal to “test” you, as a child does. Your new pet might misbehave; he’ll look for your consistency to show him how to act in your home. It’s up to you to use positive reinforcement training strategies to show him how to be a part of your family.

ADOPTION PROCESS

  1. Potential adopter fills out an adoption application and signs (e-signature ok) the agreement. We prefer online applications, but they can also be filled out onsite at the event)

  2. Attend our next adoption event or be invited to a meet and greet. Make sure you bring proof of ownership or a copy of your lease. If you are adopting an adult dog and currently have a dog(s), please plan to bring them along for a meet-and-greet.

  3. At the event there will be time for animal visitation as well as a short interview with one of our volunteers. We will bring in people in the order that they arrived at the adoption event.

  4. If we feel that the dog is a good fit for your family, we will move forward with the adoption.

  5. At the time of adoption, the adopter will be given the dogs medical records, any information we have on them, and a small baggie of the food they are eating.  An agreement will be signed transferring the ownership of the animal, and the fee will be paid. In the rare instance that the dog has not been altered yet, you will be set up in a foster-to-adopt. The rescue will work with you to schedule the spay or neuter as quickly as possible - this must be done within 30 days (unless an extension is granted by the rescue) and before the adoption can be finalized.

  6. The adopter can then take home their new family member!

**We do reserve the right to deny adoptions if needed

Prior to adoption, all of the dogs will be spayed/neutered, microchipped, dewormed, and vaccinated per their age. Dogs over 6 months will be heart worm tested and started on preventative.

During every part of the process, The Good Dog Rescue is a resource for you, so please let us know if you have any questions. We are here to help you find a great fit for your family, but remember that bringing a new animal into your home is a transition that takes time and commitment.

Please understand that we are a volunteer-run organization. We will be respectful of your time, and we ask that you be respectful of ours. Also keep in mind that our first priority is what is in the best interest of the dogs.

Thank you for your interest in adopting through The Good Dog Rescue. We look forward to working with you.
